Clarkson golf team to send two teams to Kangaroos Invitational in Canton

POTSDAM -- A late addition to the 2014 schedule, the Clarkson University Golf team will at least stay local this weekend when it travels to participate in the SUNY Canton Kangaroos Invitational at Partridge Run Golf & Country Club.

The Golden Knights will send two teams to the nearby tournament, as will SUNY Potsdam and St. Lawrence, while the host will have just one team participating along with a couple of individuals for the one-day event to start at 1:00 pm on Friday.

All 10 of the Clarkson golfers are expected to participate, and several have had the opportunity to participate in multiple tournaments this year despite the short slate thus far. Tyler Cline (Tuxedo, NY) will undoubtedly be seeded as the team's number one golfer on one team, as the fourth-year collegian is led the way in all three tournaments so far, averaging 74.8 strokes per round.

Among Cline's five rounds this year, he has shot a three-under par 69 and a one-over par 73. Last weekend, he finished in sixth place among 128 golfers at the Duke Nelson Invitational with a two-day score of 151.

Junior Scott Henning (Vienna, VA) has Clarkson's second-best average so far this year, shooting sub-80 on average. A tough go at the Duke Nelson has cost Jim Greg (Clifton Park, NY) in his average, but his first three rounds had him shooting 76. Juniors Matt Blair (South Glens Falls, NY) and Evan Cody (Malta, NY) are just a tick above last year's scoring averages and a solid round at Partridge Run could see them ease below their 80 averages.

All three teams offer plenty of resistance as each has some impressive individuals. St. Lawrence is led by Jack Whelan, who, like Tyler Cline, was named as a PING Division III All-American Honorable Mention last spring. Whelan has excelled in four rounds so far, averaging 70.25 strokes per 18 holes, including three sub-par rounds. For Potsdam, both Conor Talty and John Hickey have performed well, with Talty capturing the Oswego Invitational on Monday with a one-day round of 72.

Both Zach Meade and Nolan Reid have shaved several strokes off their game in 2014 to push themselves into contention at numerous tournaments this year, and Reid was picked as his conference's golfer of the week after firing a 75 and a 74 in two, one-day tournaments.
