PLATTSBURGH -- The Clarkson University Cross Country teams opened the 2010 campaign with second-place showings at the Cardinal Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Alex Benway (Queensbury, NY) was the Golden Knights top runner on the day, placing third in the men’s race with a time of 15:48. The Clarkson men posted 48 points, trailing only host Plattsburgh State (18 points) in the four-team race. The Cardinals’ Mike Heymann won the race with a time of 15:36 over the 5-kilomter course.
Sophomore Patrick Carroll (Queensbury, NY) was the Clarkson men’s second-leading runner with a ninth-place time of 16:30. Freshman Dan Fritz (Cicero, NY) placed 10th in the field of 110 runners with a time of 16:31. Juniors Matt Gammariello (Webster, NY), Neal Campbell (Queensbury, NY) and Tim Sick (Chambersburg, PA) finished 12th (16:46), 14th (17:01) and 15th (17:10), respectively. Freshman Nick Marshall (Huntington, VT) placed 16th (17:16).
Freshman Catherine Zarnofsky (Glenville, NY) led the Clarkson Women with an eight-place time of 21:14. Junior Maureen Hill (Latham, NY) followed closely behind in ninth place (21:54). Sophomore Rachel Bachman (Queensbury, NY) was 10th (22:41).
Junior Bethann Parmelee (Waverly, NY), freshman Erin Corrigan (Remsen, NY), sophomore Jessica Hernandez (Owego, NY) and freshman Natalie Worley (Williamsville, NY) finished 11th (22:51), 12th (22:56), 13th (23:03) and (23:10), respectively.
Plattsburgh also won the women’s race with a time 15 points to Clarkson’s 50.
