Carly Dziekan and Alex Clark both scored goals for the St. Lawrence University field hockey team, but it wasn't enough to overcome a potent SUNY Cortland offense, as the Red Dragons defeated the Saints 8-2 in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon in Cortland.
Gabby Stein and Megan O'Brien both scored three goals for Cortland, which improved to 13-3 on the season.
Cortland got out of the gate quickly, building a 3-0 lead in the first eight minutes, 18 seconds. Clark cut the lead to 3-1, one-timing a centering pass from Maggie Wraight for her fourth goal of the year in the 21st minute.
After the Red Dragons answered with their fourth goal of the afternoon, the Saints trimmed the lead to 4-2 with 10 minutes to play in the first half. Melissa Grosshans sent a hard ball at the Cortland net from outside the arc on a penalty corner. It was tipped and played by Cortland goalkeeper Kailynne Reinoehl, and Dziekan picked up the loose ball and found the open net for her second goal of the season. With the goal, St. Lawrence became just the fifth team this season to score two goals against Cortland, which has allowed just 14 goals this season.
The Red Dragons, however, went on a 4-0 run in the second half to put the game away.
Jessica Welsh added a goal and two assists for Cortland, who earned the No. 1 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament with a perfect 6-0 conference record.
Reinoehl made nine saves for Cortland, while Julia Hudson stopped 10 shots for the Saints. Cortland held a 28-12 advantage in shots, but just a 9-8 edge in penalty corners.
The Saints, now 5-11 on the year, will close the 2016 season against SUNY Oswego on North Country Field on Friday at 4 p.m.
