The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team fell 71-49 in its 2012-13 home-opener to Plattsburgh State on Tuesday evening at the Burkman Gymnasium. Though the Saints (1-2) were able to cut the deficit to nine in the second half, the Cardinals (2-1) delivered clutch shooting down the stretch to earn the non-conference victory.

Plattsburgh controlled most aspects of the game, including rebounds (55-38), assists (20-12) and steals (11-7), while committing three fewer turnovers. The Saints struggled to find rhythm on the offensive end, shooting 24% from the field, while the Cardinals shot 35% from the floor.

Kathleen Payne led the visitors with a game-high 19 points, while Brooke Reifinger, Brittany Marshall and Devona Paul each scored in double digits. Catherine Cassidy had eight assists and five steals for the Cardinals.

Sophomore Kara McDuffee led the Saints with 17 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Ali Cady chipped in seven points, four rebounds and four steals, and rookie Julia Raue added six points off the bench.

Plattsburgh trailed 17-16 before finishing the first half on a 16-4 run to gain all the momentum heading into halftime with a 31-18 lead.

In the second half, St. Lawrence was able to cut the deficit to nine (43-34) with pairs of free throws by Cady and Raue. However, a three-pointer by Payne at 11:05 put the visitors back up by 16 points (48-34), and the Cardinals kept a double figure lead the rest of the way.

The Saints will look to rebound from tonight's loss on Friday when they take on the Bombers of Ithaca. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
