Potsdam, NY – A tied score late had yet another overtime looming for the Clarkson University Men’s Soccer team, but senior Tobin Boomer (Louisville, KY) tallied his first goal of the season with 13.5 seconds remaining to lift the Golden Knights to a 2-1 Liberty League victory over ninth-ranked Hobart College Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights earned their third victory of the season, improving to 3-5-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the conference, while the Statesmen suffered their first loss of 2011, falling to 7-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in Liberty League contests.

After a disappointing loss to Plattsburgh State on Wednesday, the Golden Knights played at a higher level against the highly-rated Statesmen, enjoying possession and getting off solid shots. Clarkson got on the scoreboard first with a late first-half score from Angelo DiFrancesco (Penfield, NY) received a pass on the right side of the penalty area. The sophomore took some time to settle himself and took a shot that was deflected by Hobart College goalkeeper Charlie Hale, but the ball made it into the net for a 1-0 Clarkson lead.

The Statesmen tied the score 17 minutes into the second half, when Clarkson was whistled for a foul outside the penalty area and Hobart received a direct kick. Alex Kittelberger stood over the ball and just rolled it over for Tommy Hayes, who ripped a past the Clarkson wall and Golden Knights’ goalkeeper Saverino Spagnolo (Ottawa, ONT).

With the luck that Clarkson has endured this season, it appeared as if overtime would be inevitable, but the Knights caught a break late in the contest and ran off on a three-on-three break. Junior Bryan Malone (Tully, NY) gained possession on the left flank and sent a pass ahead to Boomer, who then hit a ball of the side of his foot and into the far corner with only 13.5 seconds remaining. It marked the first time this season that Clarkson has scored more than one goal in a game, and the tally proved to be the game-winner.

Clarkson out shot Hobart 13-10, but trailed in corner kick opportunities 4-2. Hale made seven saves for the Statesmen, while Spagnolo stopped two shots for Clarkson.
