Boghosian nets five goals in Saints' women's lax season opener win

Senior Rachel Boghosian recorded five goals to lead the St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team to 13-7 win over SUNY Canton to open the 2018 season.

Second to Boghosian was classmate Ashley Norris, who scored four goals, while sophomore transfer Morgan Barlow added one goal and a team-high three assists. Greta Massey, Kayla Schmalz and Emma Jewett each tallied their first goals of the season. Jacqueline Sovie and Maddie Rice each picked up five ground balls, while Schmalz won a team-high seven draw controls.

Boghosian struck first for the Saints, with her first goal of the game and the season just one minute and 55 seconds into play.

One minute and 19 seconds later, Norris added her first unassisted goal of the season.

Boghosian added her second of the game off a quick pass from behind the net from Barlow. Barlow scored her first collegiate goal for the Saints one minute and 20 seconds later to give the Saints a 5-0 lead with 16:40 to play in the first half. ??Boghosian tacked on her third goal of the game about eight minutes later with a quick behind-the-back goal at the 10:27 mark of the first half.

Molly Denny put SUNY Canton on the board with a shot from just in front of the crease with 7:25 remaining.

Kayla Schmalz put the Scarlet and Brown up 8-1 on a free-position goal and St. Lawrence held the 8-1 halftime advantage, outshooting the Roos 16-10 in the first 30 minutes of play.

Norris opened up scoring for the Saints in the second frame just 48 seconds into the second half, giving the Scarlet and Brown a 9-1 lead.

Denny added her second of the game with a shot to the lower left corner just over two and a half minutes into the second frame. Devin Kelly closed the Saints lead to six with her first goal of the game. Denny fired another shot from the right hand side of the crease netting a hat trick for the Roos with 19:08 to play.

Boghosian would net two more goal in the second, while Norris notched her fourth of the game. The Roos would see six goals in the second half, two from Denny, two from Mary Clare Bowes and two from Kelly in a comeback bid for SUNY Canton.

Denny led the Roos with three goals, while Kelly and Bowes each added two apiece. Denny and Amanda Woods each grabbed four ground balls for SUNY Canton, while Mia Jermano and Katelynn Nutter each caused two turnovers.

St. Lawrence held a 29-19 shot advantage and picked up 29 ground balls to the Roos' 23. Saints' goalkeeper Sophie Cardenali recorded her first win between the pipes with three saves, while Nicole Piskoroski recorded 10 saves for the Roos.

Today's win also marked head coach Hannah Corkery Collins first win as head coach at St. Lawrence.

The Saints open the 2018 campaign 1-0, while SUNY Canton fell to 1-1.

St. Lawrence will travel to Middlebury to take on the Panthers in a Monday night matchup on March 12th at 5 p.m.
