St. Lawrence University junior Alanna Piroli had a game high five points on three goals and two assists, leading the women's lacrosse team to an impressive 15-7 victory over the University of Rochester on Saturday in Rochester, NY. The Saints used a seven-goal second half and outstanding defense on the ride to clinch the win.
The win moves St. Lawrence to 1-1 in Liberty League play and to 3-6 overall. The loss drops the Yellowjackets to 2-5 (1-1).
The Scarlet and Brown finished with a 24-14 advantage in shots after holding Rochester to only four total shots in the second half. St. Lawrence also owned the edge in ground balls (23-11) and draw controls (12-11) while posting a perfect 7-for-7 mark on free position shots.
Rochester own the momentum in the opening 15:00 minutes of the first half, outscoring the Saints 5-3. However, a five-goal run by St. Lawrence, including goals from sophomores Hanne Bailey and Johanna Kelley, seniors Kim Cooper and Kim Morse and junior Margie Bailey, would push the visitors out in front, 8-5, with 3:45 left in the stanza. Rochester's Lindsey Randall capped the first half scoring to pull the Yellowjackets within two at 8-6.
St. Lawrence would continue their sharp play to open the second half, as they scored the first six goals and kept Rochester off the board for over 20:00 minutes to take control of the game. Piroli, who had two goals in the first half, scored her third to open the second half. Kelley, Cooper, senior captain Kelsey Redpath, sophomore Brigid Hurley and Morse would follow Piroli's goal and give the Saints a firm lead of 14-6.
Hilary Rosenthal and Morse exchanged goals in the final 9:00 minutes to cap the game scoring at 15-7.
Senior captain Anna Marchand made three saves in the victory, while Rochester's Frances Cooley stopped seven shots.
St. Lawrence will begin a four-game home stand next weekend, as the team hosts Liberty League foes Union and Skidmore on Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9. The Saints will take on the Dutchwomen at 4:00pm at Hall-Leet Stadium.
