POTSDAM, N.Y.—Junior attack Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) buried a free position goal at 4:19 of overtime to deliver the SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team's (7-5, 3-2 SUNYAC) first ever victory over SUNY Oneonta (4-9, 1-4) on Tuesday afternoon. The 15-14 win was also the Bears' seventh of the season, matching the team record set in 2009, and their program-best third SUNYAC victory. Junior attack Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) led the Bears with a career-high five points on four goals and an assist. Newman and junior midfielder Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) each added three goals. Junior goalie Devan Olschewske (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) made nine saves for the 15th win of her career.

The Red Dragons built a 6-2 lead over the opening 25:35, with Potsdam's goals coming from Lapinski at 19:02 and Cole at 14:39. The Bears then answered with three goals in the final four minutes. Senior midfielder Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) set up Newman's first at 3:41. With 25 seconds left junior attack Mariah Pierce (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) fed junior midfielder Alyssa Ferenczy (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) for a man-up goal. Oneonta captured the following draw control, but McClusky forced a turnover. She hit Lapinski with a pass in stride and Lapinski raced half the field to beat Red Dragon freshman goalie Jaclyn Marry (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) with six seconds to go in the half. The Bears trailed 6-5 at the break.

Oneonta scored the first three goals of the second half for its biggest lead of the day at 9-5 with 24:03 remaining. Just 35 seconds later Newman netted her second to ignite a 9-1 Potsdam run. Six Bears scored during the stretch including two each from Lapinski, Cole and freshman midfielder Meaghan Paige (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage). Senior defender Lizzie Marchbanks (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and McClusky scored the other two. The Bears led 14-10 with 4:19 to play. With time running out, the Red Dragons struck back to tie the game. Oneonta sophomore attack Jaimie Morris (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) capped the comeback with two goals in the last 56 seconds. With three seconds left, Marry stopped a McClusky free position attempt to send the game to overtime.

Cole grabbed the draw control to open the extra session. The Bears carefully worked the ball around the Red Dragons' zone for nearly two minutes. At 4:19, Newman smartly took the ball in toward the net and was awarded the decisive free position. She ripped the shot past Marry to end the contest.

Marry finished with eight saves. Senior attack Catherine Clark (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills) led Oneonta with seven points on two goals and five assists.

The shots and ground balls were even at 28-28 and 19-19, respectively. Potsdam finished with a 17-14 edge in draw controls including seven from senior defender Maggie McCabe (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee). Cole and freshman midfielder Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) had three apiece. At 60 (18g, 42a) points this season, McClusky needs just 12 in her final three regular season games to top Hall of Famer Alisha Schaad's single-season record 71 set in 2008. Newman has 58 points so far on 49 goals and nine assists. Schaad also owns the program's single-season goals record of 62. After causing two turnovers, McCabe moved past Margaret Wall '15 into fifth on the all-time list with 46.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host SUNY Geneseo in another critical SUNYAC contest.
