UTICA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (2-3) rolled past SUNY Poly (0-2) with a 19-5 road victory on Saturday afternoon. Junior captain Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) recorded a game-high seven points on three goals and four assists to lead the Bears. Freshman midfielder Zoe Morgenroth (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) scored a personal best five goals and senior captain Rachael Huntley (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) added three goals and two assists.
Potsdam seized control of the game immediately, with a 5-1 run over the first 8:24. O'Connor scored twice, while Morgenroth, Huntley and sophomore attack Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) each added a marker to build the four-goal advantage by the 21:36 mark. Stark, O'Connor and Huntley each added assists during the stretch. After Kayla Prosinski closed the gap to 5-2 for the Wildcats at 14:33, sophomore attack Lane Perl (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) set up sophomore midfielder Sam Mace (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) at 11:27 to ignite a 6-0 run. Senior captain Morgan Cook (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) made it 7-2 at 8:21 and Perl assisted on O'Connor's third goal at 4:40. Morgenroth netted the next two at 2:37 and 1:21 with helpers form Huntley and O'Connor and Potsdam led 10-2 at the break.
O'Connor assisted on Morgenroth's third just 36 seconds into the second half for nine-goal lead. Mari Ames netted SUNY Poly's third goal at 25:18, but the Bears answered with a 7-0 run from six different scorers to put the game away over the next 15 minutes. Huntley scored twice while, sophomore defender Kayla McCabe (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown), Stark, Morgenroth, Cook and Perl chipped in the other five and Potsdam was up 18-3 with 10:24 to play. Sophomore attack Ashley Burrowes (Brentwood, N.Y./Brentwood) scored the Bears' final goal with an assist from sophomore Alexa Ferrer (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) at 2:33.
Sophomore goalie Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) needed just two saves to earn her fifth career victory. Hannah Garramone stopped 12 shots for the Wildcats.
The Bears outshot SUNY Poly 38-10 and finished with a 30-13 advantage in ground balls and 16-5 in draw controls.
Senior defender Danielle Pound (Henderson, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) had a game-high seven draw controls along with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. O'Connor and McCabe recorded game-highs in ground balls (7) and caused turnovers (4), respectively.
The Bears are now off until they head to Canton to take on St. Lawrence University at 4 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
