POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (2-20) held on to a late fourth quarter lead to defeat SUNY Canton (11-11) 45-39 on Tuesday night. Junior guard Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) led the Bears with 12 points and a season-high four steals. Tatiana Laroche posted a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Roos.

Laroche was the first to score in the contest after a put-back layup. After a Luckie free-throw, freshman Hannah Marcellus forward (Potsdam, N.Y./Madrid-Waddington) made the first field goal for the Bears, to narrow the Canton lead 4-3. The score stayed the same until Taylor Saltus converted a three-point play for the Roos, with 5:37 left in the quarter. Saltus' play started an 11-5 run to end the quarter. Four different players scored for Canton during the stretch, while three players scored for the Potsdam.

The Roos tried to continue their run in the second quarter, but were halted by a junior forward Victoria Shopovick (White Plains, N.Y./Maria Regina) jumper. With a four-point advantage, Antanasia Chambers converted an old fashion three-point play to spark a 9-0 run for Canton. The Bears answered back with three three-pointers while keeping the Roos scoreless for the final 4:30 in the first half. Sophomore guard Drew Dufrane (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool), junior guard Mikayla Horton (Hammond, N.Y./Hammond) and Luckie hit the threes for the Bears. Potsdam entered halftime down 24-20.

The Bears outscored the Roos throughout the third quarter 12-4, including a 6-0 run to end the period. Shopovick led the Bears with four points, while Marcellus, Horton, Luckie, and junior guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) each had a bucket. Billie Rivenburgh and Sade Rogers were the only Canton players to score in the quarter.

The fourth quarter started slow as neither team scored in the first four minutes. Chambers broke the silence with a three to narrow the deficit to one with 5:46 remaining. Both teams traded jumpers. With 3:20 remaining, Luckie hit a three to give the Bears a 37-33 lead. The teams then went bucket for bucket, however Potsdam had the last word on a jumper from Dufrane to maintain the four-point lead with 36 seconds left. Canton could not answer and with a pair of free throws from Luckie, the Bears closed out the 45-39 victory.

Shopovick went three-for-three from the field to finish with six points and three rebounds. Freshman forward Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) led the Bears with six rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Saltus had seven points and three assists, while Chambers had six points to go along with her five steals and nine rebounds. Rivenburgh also finished with six points and tallied 11 rebounds.

Potsdam is back in action on Friday as the travel to face Plattsburgh State at 5:30 p.m.
