Bears volleyball split with Owls, Colonials

DANSBURY, CONN.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (9-14) defeated Keene State (19-6) 3-1 before falling to host Western Connecticut State (12-9) by the same score at the Colonia Classic. Sophomore outside hitter Gabby Scott (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) had a big day for the Bears with 17 kills and 31 digs as did senior setter Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) with 76 assists, 16 digs and three aces.

In the first match against the Owls, Potsdam trailed only once before taking set one 25-21. A late rally by Keene State in set two allowed them to avoid the sweep with a 27-25 win. The Bears rolled to a 25-15 set three win and kept the Owls at bay with 25-22 win in the fourth set to close out the victory.

Sophomore middle hitter Monica Mack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) put forth a 15-kill, three-ace performance to pace Potsdam. Scott recorded 13 kills, 20 digs and two assists, while fellow sophomore outside hitter Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) totaled nine kills and a block. Junior libero Natalie Magallon (Commerce, Calif./Bell Gardens) had a game-high 30 digs and Rodda was her consistent self with 40 assists, nine digs and three aces.

The Bears struck quickly in the finale, taking set one 25-19. The Colonials held on for a 25-23 win in set two and then pulled away in sets three and four with 25-19 and 25-16 wins, respectively.

Scott had another 14 kills and 11 digs along with two aces. Hansen collected 10 kills and an assist. Mack contributed seven more kills and sophomore defensive specialist Alina Acevado (Thornwood, N.Y./Westlake) finished with nine digs. Magallon had a contest-best 29 digs and three assists. Rodda closed the weekend with 36 assists and a block.

Potsdam is back in action at Brockport next weekend for the final matches of SUNYAC Pool Play. The Bears face the host Golden Eagles at 5 p.m. on Friday. They then square off with Buffalo State at noon on Saturday and finish up with SUNY Cortland at 5 p.m.
