Bear's volleyball falls to New Paltz, Oneonta in SUNYAC pool play

ONEONTA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (5-12, 0-3 SUNYAC) fell in two 3-0 contests to SUNY New Paltz (17-3, 3-0) and SUNY Oneonta (11-8, 1-2) on the second day of SUNYAC Pool Play on Saturday morning.

The defending SUNYAC Champion Hawks looked like they hadn't missed a step since last season, taking three straight sets by scores of 25-11, 25-15 and 25-11. Graduate student outside hitter Annie Smith (Chateauguay, N.Y./Chateauguay) continued to be the Bears offensive leader with seven kills and two aces, while senior outside hitters Sharon Ofori (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) and Liza Fields (Duanesburg, N.Y./Duanesburg) had two apiece. Senior libero Gabby Arana (Williston Park, N.Y./Herricks) finished with 15 digs and freshman setter Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) added 11 assists.

Oneonta swept to 25-18, 25-23 and 25-17 set victories over Potsdam in the weekend finale. Freshman outside hitter Kelsey Tompkins (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) had a team-high five kills and freshman setter Kelsea Healis ( San Diego, Calif./Rancho Cotate) added four along with four assists. Smith finished with three kills, seven digs and a solo block. Arana had 12 digs and Topf contributed 10 assists and five digs.

Potsdam is back in action on Friday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. when the Bears head to Bennington, Vt. to face Coach Stokes' former team, the Southern Vermont Mountaineers.
