The SUNY Potsdam softball team scored a combined 13 runs in two games on Friday, but was unable to come away with a victory against Oneonta State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference doubleheader at Oneonta, N.Y.

The Bears (7-11 overall, 0-4 SUNYAC) were downed 6-3 in the first game before suffering an 11-10 setback in the nightcap.

“Our players came out with a lot of energy and played hard, but we didn’t make enough of the routine plays to win and just fell short,” Potsdam coach Shannon Dillabough said.

In Game 2, the two teams went back and forth as the Red Dragons (10-7, 4-2) responded each time Potsdam took a lead. Oneonta took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Bears, who committed four errors in the game, scored once in the sixth but were unable to tie the game, leaving a runner in scoring position in each of the last two innings.

Junior Heidi Grebinger (Bellmore, N.Y.) finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Senior Dana Vollmuth (East Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore Jenn Jones (Watertown, N.Y.) each hit a two-run homer. Vollmuth posted two hits while Jones tallied a team-high three RBIs. Sophomore Amanda Perry (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base.

Junior Meaghan Patterson (Malone, N.Y.) took the loss, her first decision of the year, in relief, pitching the last 1 2/3 innings. Freshman Ashley Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y.) started the game, striking out four over the first 4 1/3.

In the first game, the Red Dragons scored six runs over the first three innings as the Bears were unable to mount a rally to get back in the contest. Junior Brittany Pawlowski (West Seneca, N.Y) moved to 3-5 with the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) over four innings of worked. Junior Katie Nawrot (Buffalo, N.Y.) didn’t allow a hit in pitching the final two frames.

Vollmuth registered three of Potsdam’s five hits, including a double. Perry reached base twice and knocked in two runs, and Jones posted one RBI.

Potsdam returns to the diamond tomorrow at New Paltz. The SUNYAC doubleheader is slated to begin at 12 p.m. in New Paltz, N.Y.
