FREDONIA, N.Y.—After falling to SUNY Fredonia (8-20, 4-10 SUNYAC) 5-1 in game one, the SUNY Potsdam softball team (10-21, 3-11) rallied for an 8-3 win in eight innings in game two. Junior shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) and senior captain Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) each homered twice in the second contest. Marsman was 5-for-8 on the day, making her the sixth player in program history to reach 100 hits.

In game one, the Blue Devils struck for three runs in the bottom of the second on a double and two singles. Fredonia hit two more RBI doubles to extend the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth. The Bears finally got on the board in the top of the seventh. Junior pinch hitter Noelle Rufa (Helena, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) started a two-out rally with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a throwing error. Junior pinch hitter Kolbi Lyon (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) followed with an infield single that brought Rufa in to score. Ott singled to keep the rally going, but Lyon was thrown out trying to advance to third to end the game.

Sophomore pitcher Sami Hubinsky (South Glens Falls, N.Y./SUNY Adirondack) (3-9) allowed four earned runs on seven hits, while striking out four. Senior Carina Chirinko (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) gave up one hit and recorded one strikeout in the final inning. Emily Shellenberger (4-8) earned the win after giving up just one unearned run on six hits and two walks. She fanned four Bears.

Ott got Potsdam off to a strong start in the second game. She drove the first pitch of the contest over the center field fence to make it 1-0. Fredonia second baseman Lindsey Forness tied the game in the bottom of the second with a solo shot of her own. The trend continued as the Bears regained the lead in the top of the third as Marsman hit the ninth homer of her career to make it 2-1. The Blue Devils tied the game in the bottom half of the third on an RBI double from left fielder Kelly Losito. Potsdam made it 3-2 in the top of the fourth after freshman center fielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) scored during a double steal. Bears freshman pitcher Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) worked around two singles to blank Fredonia in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. Marsman singled in the top of the fifth to reach 100 hits. The Blue Devils rallied again to tie the game 3-3 with two outs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from third baseman Cassidy Herman. McCauley recovered to get the third out and strand two Fredonia baserunners.

After neither team could push across the decisive run in the seventh, the Bears broke the game open with a five-run eighth. Marsman led off with her second homer of the game. After junior pinch hitter Angela Yodis (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) and Lyon reached, Falsion knocked them with a triple to make it 6-3. Ott followed with another rocket over the center field fence and Potsdam led 8-3. Forness hit a one-out double to keep Fredonia's hopes alive, but McCauley got right fielder Lauren Pixley to line into a game-ending double play at short.

McCauley (2-4) was great in relief again to pick up her second career victory. She allowed one run on six hits in 5.2 innings pitched. She struck out two and didn't walk a batter. Sophomore Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) started for Potsdam and allowed two runs on four hits in the first 2.1. Meghan DeGroat started and received a no-decision for the Blue Devils after allowing three runs on nine hits in the first 3.2 innings. Erika Whitney (1-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs, one earned, on four hits and two walks in four innings. Shellenberger pitched the last third of eighth and allowed an unearned run on Ott's second blast.

Ott was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI and Marsman was 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Hubinsky went 2-for-5 and Falsion finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

The Bears are off tomorrow before heading to Liverpool on Wednesday to host SUNY New Paltz in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
