GENESEO, N.Y.—SUNY Geneseo (7-5, 2-2 SUNYAC) downed the SUNY Potsdam men's lacrosse team (4-9, 1-3) 9-4 on Saturday afternoon. Senior attackman Eric Soderquist (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) scored twice and added an assist for the Bears, while and sophomore midfielder Josh Huiatt (Lisbon, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) and senior midfielder Nick Orsini (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) each had one goal. Junior goalie Zach Sheridan (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) continued to play well with 16 saves.
The Knights went up 2-0 in the opening quarter with goals from Andrew Cummings and Ryan Kelly at 10:43 and 8:45. Huiatt got Potsdam on the board with his 19th of the season at 7:19, but Matthew Malone struck with 56 seconds left and Geneseo led 3-1 after one.
Soderquist opened the scoring in the second quarter at 12:52 to close the gap to 3-2. However, Geneseo scored the next five in a row. Kyle Wanamaker (11:49), Ryan Dorney (10:35) and Cummings (8:08) scored in succession to give the Knights a 6-2 advantage at the break.
Tim Fallo and James Pratt scored at 13:28 and 11:29 to make it 8-2 early in the third quarter. Junior midfielder Ryan Waldron (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) set up Soderquists' team high 26th of the season at 11:06 to stop the run and the defenses kept both teams off the board for the rest of the quarter.
Dillon Rogers added a final marker for Geneseo at the 10:12 mark of the fourth. Soderquist then set up Orsini's 12th of the year with 3:51 to play to close the scoring.
Geneseo's Tyler Wetzel frustrated Potsdam with 16 saves to earn the victory between the pipes.
Huiatt had a game-high six ground balls along with a caused turnover. Soderquist and junior long-stick middie Colby Chapman (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) each collected five ground balls. Senior Marc Leveroni (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) won seven faceoffs on the afternoon.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. when they head to Oswego State.
