CORTLAND, N.Y.—Six different Bears scored as the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (6-7, 2-5 SUNYAC) defeated SUNY Cortland (4-8, 2-7) 6-3 on Saturday night. Junior assistant captain Vincent Guimond (Sorel-Tracy, Quebec/Gloucester Rangers) led the Bears offense with a goal and two assists and senior assistant captain Nate Skidmore (Syracuse, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) stopped 25 shots for the win.

Potsdam outshot by the Red Dragons 12-9 in the first period. The play was very even until Cortland was whistled for hooking at 10:46. 16 seconds later, the Bears jumped out in front. Guimond took a feed from sophomore forward Brett Horn (Cary, N.C./Humboldt Broncos) and beat Cortland goalie Nick Modica from the top of the right faceoff circle. Senior captain Mike Sweeney (Pittsburgh, Pa./PAL Islanders) picked up the second assist. Skidmore stopped each shot that came his way to preserve the 1-0 lead through the first 20 minutes.

The second period saw the teams combine for six goals. After a turnover on Potsdam's blue line, Sweeney hit freshman forward Jack Bloem (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Connecticut Rangers) in stride and he took it the length of the ice and scored from the left faceoff circle at 2:32. Just 29 seconds later, freshman forward Tom Terranova (Middletown, N.J./Syracuse Stars) scored from the right faceoff circle after a perfect breakout pass from sophomore defenseman Jon Venter (Guildford, Conn./Syracuse Stars). Freshman forward Ben Thompson (Canterbury, Conn./New Hampshire Avalanche) also assisted on the goal. The goal chased Modica from the net. He was replaced by Salvatore Lauretta. Three minutes later, Cortland went on its first power play and Connor Beck scored to get the Red Dragons within 3-1 at 6:09. The momentum only lasted 1:27 as freshman forward Devin Panzeca (Lake Zurich, Ill./East Coast Wizard) tipped a shot from Guimond past Lauretta and Potsdam regained its three-goal lead. The Red Dragons added another power-play goal at 10:13 as Alex Storjohann closed the gap to 4-2. Again the Bears countered quickly. At 11:30, Terranova found junior forward Jake Juron (Latham, N.Y./South Shore Kings) in the slot and he directed the puck into the top of the net for another three-goal lead.

Cortland got back within 5-3 4:17 into the third period on a goal from Mike Sciore. The Bears answered with their sixth goal at 10:32 on another breakout. Panzeca found Guimond in the neutral zone and he carried the puck into the Red Dragons' end on the left wing side. He then connected with Horn between the two circles and he scored to made it 6-3. The teams traded power plays after the goal, but the score was unchanged.

Lauretta made 19 saves and allowed three goals in the last 37:07. Modica stopped 12 shots and allowed three goals in the first 22:50.

Potsdam outshot Cortland 37-28 and was 1-for-2 on the power play. The Red Dragons were 2-for-5 on the man advantage.

The Bears are now off until they head to Geneva, N.Y. for a two-game series with No. 12 Hobart College on Jan. 4-5.
