Aston, Pa.—The 11th-ranked Neumann Knights (8-4-2) scored three first period goals en route to a 5-2 win over the SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (3-10) on Friday night. The Bears got goals from freshmen forwards Brandon Couto (Bowmanville, Ontario/Cobourg Cougars) and Mike Arnold (Didsbury, Alberta/Kingston Voyageurs) and junior goaltender Trevor O’Neill (Bobcaygeon, Ontario/Stouffville Spirit) made 35 saves.

After an even start to the contest, Neumann capitalized on a few Potsdam mistakes to grab a 3-0 lead over the first period’s final eight minutes. The Bears closed the gap to two just 56 seconds into the second period as seniors Colin MacLennan (Kensington, Prince Edward Island/Summerside Capitals) and Patrick Choules (Bowmanville, Ontario/Cobourg Cougars) set up Couto’s marker on the power play. The Knights regained the three-goal advantage at the 10:53 mark and took the 4-1 lead into the second intermission.

Midway through the third period, Couto assisted on Arnold’s goal to get Potsdam to within 4-2. However, Neumann got some insurance with a goal with just 1:58 to play and closed out the 5-2 victory.

Ross MacKinnon made 16 saves for the Knights. Potsdam finished 1-4 on the power-play, while Neumann was 0-6. The Bears had two goals waved off during the game.

Bears Head Coach Chris Bernard credited his team with a strong effort and for continuing to battle.

“I felt we had a really strong effort,” said Bernard. “We had some chances, won a lot of loose puck battles, but the breaks didn’t go our way tonight.

Bernard was pleased with the performance he got from his players.

“This was a definite step in the right direction for us, after a tough finish to the semester,” added Bernard. “We just need to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps and go out and battle tomorrow.”

Potsdam gets another shot at the Knights tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.
