Baez and Douglas record 100th career hits as Roos explode for 16 runs in win v. Saints

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton baseball team exploded for 16 runs as it earned its second straight win against St. Lawrence University with a 16-12 road victory on Thursday.

The Roos improve to 12-22 with the win, while the Saints fall to 12-20.

Greg Dobies (Schenectady, NY) reached on an error that scored Cruz and Douglas scored on an error that allowed Clemente to reach. Hoberman concluded the scoring in the second with a 2 RBI single to center to plate Chris Roenbeck (Plattsburgh, NY) and Dobies. Overall, 12 batters stepped to the plate in the inning for the Roos.

After the Saints got on the board with one run in the third the SUNY Canton bats went back to work with four runs each in the fourth and sixth innings. Roenbeck scored after Malinoski was hit by a pitch and Cruz walked home Clemente. Matos and Douglas rounded out the fourth inning scoring on an RBI single and RBI fielder's choice, respectively.

Cruz started off the scoring in the sixth with an RBI triple to center scoring Malinoski. After a Matos walk Douglas followed with a 2 RBI triple to right center to bring home Cruz and Matos. Roenbeck rounded out the SUNY Canton scoring on the day with an RBI base hit to center to score Douglas.

St. Lawrence added eight runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth and tacked on one run in the seventh and two in the ninth for the 16-12 final.

Jake St. Mary (Brushton, NY) earned his second win of the season on the mound giving up five earned over six innings while striking out two batters. Tom Brusca (Middletown, NY) tossed one inning in relief without giving up a hit or earned run. Chris Lee (Brooklyn, NY) tossed two innings surrendering one hit, a walk and two earned runs.

Hoberman led the Roos with four hits and drove in three runs, while Roenbeck reached base five times on three base hits and two walks. Matos, Douglas and Clemente all registered multi-hit games as well and Douglas drove in a game-high four runs.

The baseball team is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Elmira College for an Empire 8 doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
