Alison Davis claims crown for CU Cross Country at CCOC Championships

Geneva, NY – Sophomore Alison Davis scooted past the finish line in 23 minutes, 28.3 seconds for the Clarkson University Cross Country team on Saturday at the Cross Country-Only Championships at Seneca Lake State Park, marking the second straight year that a Golden Knight claimed the top spot at the event.

The Golden Knights women repeated as CCOC Champions, finishing with 32 points, just one ahead of SUNY New Paltz (33). Clarkson also led 12 other teams including William Smith (89), Hartwick (167), Cazenovia (201), Keuka (218), Morrisville State (223), Elmira (236), SUNY Canton (244), Paul Smiths (281), Wells (289), SUNY Poly (290), D'Youville (295), and Medaille (303). The men finished one spot of repeating their title performance from last season, taking second among 15 teams with 43 points, trailing champion SUNY New Paltz (23), but leading Hobart (102), Morrisville State (137), Hartwick (151), Paul Smiths (197), SUNY Canton 9245), Wells (254), SUNY Poly (263), D'Youville (287), Elmira (303), Cazenovia (312), Keuka (328), Hilbert (345) and Medaille (391).

Though Davis was the top runner among the 131 competitors on the women's side in the 6,000-meter event, it wasn't until Sarah Duclos crossed the finish line in 11th place in 24:54.2 that Clarkson secured the title. Her time was 6.5 seconds ahead of the 12-place runner, who just happened to be from New Paltz, which would have been enough to flip flop the scores. Also scoring points in the top 10 for the Golden Knights were Kelley Hull (fifth, 23:47.8), Rachael Jones (seventh, 24:32.7) and Emilee Carpenter (eighth, 24:36.4). Ellen Jaworski (16th, 25:23.5), Katie Ackner (18th, 25:44.6) and Hannah Phillips (22nd, 26:04.2) also would have kept Clarkson in the top two teams had any of the others faltered. Davis claimed the first-place prize by finishing 8.1 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

On the men's side, Clarkson had as much depth as any team in the race with nine runners finishing in the top 18 spots, but New Paltz saw enough high-end performances to outdistance Clarkson in points. Lukas Patrizio took fifth among 145 runners in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 26:11.4 and Kris Lizins was just two spots behind in seventh in 26:17.3. AJ Beers was 6.2 seconds behind Lizins, but that was still good enough for eighth place. Alexander DeWitt took 11th in 26:50.8 and Austin Smith came in 12th with a time of 26:59.2 to round out the Clarkson scoring. The Golden Knights still would have easily maintained their second place spot with their next four runners thanks to strong performances from Stephen Paddock (13th, 27:06.6), Dennis Mooney (14th, 27:12.3), Jacob Erdman (16th, 27:15.1) and Chase Weaver (18th, 27:32.2).
