St. Lawrence County voters go to polls Tuesday to help elect Congressman, local candidates
St. Lawrence County voters on Nov. 3 will help elect one of two candidates in the hotly contested 23rd Congressional race as well as candidates for a number of local contests.
With Gouverneur Republican Dede Scozzafava having pulled out of the race over the weekend, voters will choose between Democrat Bill Owens of Plattsburgh and Saranac Lake native and Conservative Doug Hoffman. They are battling to replace Congressman John McHugh.
The race has attracted considerable attention nationwide.
Locally, five candidates are seeking two town council seats in Potsdam, four are running for three Ogdensburg City Council seats, two candidates are battling for town supervisor in Massena and three people are vying for two village trustee posts in Canton.
Other area highlights include a four-way race for highway superintendent in Madrid and a three-person race for highway superintendent in Colton.
Polling places throughout the county will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day.
Many voters will be using the county’s new electronic optical-reader machines for tallying votes for the first time. The machines were purchased to comply with federal laws to replace old mechanical machines which were becoming harder and harder to maintain.
