CANTON – The State University of New York Police Department is looking for officers, and the next civil service entrance exam is being given Nov. 15, but applications for the test have to be in by Oct. 13.

SUNY Canton University Police Deputy Chief Steven L. Livernois says there are roughly 500 officers stationed at about 28 colleges and universities across the state. "This career allows officers to go anywhere, or work near their hometown," Livernois said.

Livernois notes that in addition to regular police work, SUNY University Police Officers are part of the education at the colleges. They speak on a variety of topics related to safety and teach first aid classes.

SUNY Canton is home to the David Sullivan - St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy, which offers the New York State basic course and the pre-employment basic course for police "Someone from the area can start here, finish here, and stay here, if they so desire," Livernois said.

More information on the upcoming test, including the minimum qualifications and job descriptions and the necessary application materials are available at the SUNY Canton University Police website, www.canton.edu/university_police/.
