Young-adult fiction writer speaks at SUNY Potsdam May 5

POTSDAM – Award-winning young-adult book author Terry Trueman will speak in Dunn Hall theater at SUNY Potsdam on Monday, May 5 at 4:30 p.m.

Trueman is the author of several books for teens. His first novel, “Stuck in Neutral,” was an "honor" book in the competition for the 2001 Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature awarded by the Young Adult Library Services Association. The award is for a book "that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature," the association says.

The author’s visit has been organized by literacy education graduate students enrolled in a course on family, school and community-based literacy collaboration. It is sponsored by private donors, the SUNY Potsdam Department of Literacy and the college’s Sheard Literacy Center.

This tournament serves as an opportunity to show hospitality and to generate fund-raising support for the Potsdam Junior Hockey Association. This year's tournament director is Kevin Regan.

The mission of the Potsdam Junior Hockey Association is to promote ice hockey and the growth of players, coaches, and parents. PJHA will develop, advance, and administer programs to provide the best possible experience for all involved. PJHA programs are designed to teach teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. Programs challenge players through skill development, personal growth, recreational hockey and competitive team play.

Crafters and artisans sought for Potsdam Summerfest show

POTSDAM – Area crafters and artisans are needed to display their wares this July 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the 41st annual Potsdam Summer Festival sponsored by the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce.

The craft and artisan show is an integral part of SummerFest’s success, with over 1,000 people looking at displays in Ives Park each year. 14-by-12-foot outdoor spaces are available for $45 for non-chamber members, $35 for chamber members, with special rates for non-profit organizations. Spaces are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis, beginning at 7 a.m.

The preference is for crafters and artisans that display and sell handmade items. The chamber welcomes artisans and crafters as well as producers of local goods such as maple products, honey, cheeses, wines and more.

Anyone interested in setting up a display during the festival is encouraged to stop in at the chamber at 1 Market St. and fill out an application, call 274-9000, or email Potsdam@slic.com for more information.

Applications must be submitted by July 3. Spaces are limited so early registration is requested.
