When the sitting president is a white nationalist, authoritarian, crotch-grabbing ignoramus who incessantly hogs the news cycle, it’s easy to forget that there are plenty of other terrible people who have served in this administration, particularly the recently jettisoned attorney general, a racist Keebler Elf named Jeff Sessions.
Sessions hates black people and marijuana, but loves voter suppression and Keebler cookies. “Good people don’t smoke marijuana,” Sessions has stated. He even once joked about the KKK, “I thought those guys were okay until I learned they smoked pot.”
Jefferson Beauregard “Se-cessions” sounds like the name of a Confederate general, the sort of guy you could build a statue of for a bunch of khaki pants wearing, tiki torch carrying Nazis to rally around. Alas, while Jeff Sessions is certainly a monument to treason in defense of slavery, he is not a literal Confederate “participation trophy” statue, so instead of meriting the president’s praise, Sessions, who engaged in one act of truly ethical conduct by recusing himself from the Russia investigation, received the president’s perpetual public humiliation before being forced to resign after the 2018 midterms.
And yet Sessions willingly allowed himself to be humiliated by the president for almost two years so he could use the justice department to comfort the privileged while afflicting the marginalized.
The United States is supposed to be a land of hope, what Emma Lazarus deemed a place of welcome for “your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free.” Yet Sessions, that folksy Gollum, pursuing an immigration policy aimed at scaring white people in places like Iowa and Idaho and North Country, into being afraid of non-white people on the southern border over 1000 miles away, directed the DOJ to literally begin denying asylum to women who are victims of domestic violence.
Domestic violence victims and gang violence victims, in Sessions’ addled mind, do not warrant entry into the United States. And children are to be separated from their parents, babes torn from their mothers’ bosoms, all to discourage refugees from simply presenting themselves at the border for asylum, an act that was perfectly legal, an act that was at the heart of what America was supposed to represent as a country, until this garbage racist administration took over the wheels of government.
I hope everyone’s tax cut is worth the tears of those immigrant children.
