New York State can pony up millions of dollars to help the victims of last years flooding along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. The heavy rains and flooding were an act of God.
In 2001, my well was polluted by road salt spread by New York State DOT, along with several other wells on my road (Rt. 68). This pollution was not an act of God, but an act of the state.
When I asked to be reimbursed for the cost of drilling a new well, the state refused to help in any way. Their response was “prove it was our fault.” Even DEC agreed that the pollution was caused by road salt.
If I damaged state property, I would expect to be held accountable. But New York State can damage private property and thumb their nose at the property owner.
If God had salted my well, New York State would have reimbursed me. It just doesn’t seem fair.
But I’ll continue to pay my taxes.
