Opinion: St. Lawrence Leadership Institute recommended to all local professionals, says Parishville woman

I am writing today in hopes of increasing interest in a valuable opportunity to professionals of all levels in St. Lawrence County.

The St. Lawrence Leadership Institute is a professional development program offered through the Division of Graduate & Continuing Education at SUNY Potsdam. Its mission is to foster the development of emerging and existing leaders for the advancement of St. Lawrence County and its communities.

As a graduate of the 2017-2018 program, I highly recommend SLLI to all local professionals in any stage of their career. The program is two-phased; the first half being personal/professional growth while the second is learning of the challenges and opportunities faced by St. Lawrence County; both are irreplaceable experiences. Each month is an opportunity to meet various leaders from different capacities and hear from their experience what challenges they are facing in each industry.

The time commitment is minimal—one meeting per month with opportunities to expand on the class via electronic communication after each class meeting. As a full-time professional and mother of three, I was able to commit the time necessary to find the program beneficial; and the personal growth opportunity helped me not only in my professional world, but in my personal life as well.

In my class, we had professionals from various industries—banking, insurance, attorney, education (all levels), agriculture, and non-profits. This gave us a vast opportunity to network, learn from each other, and work together to find how our varying professions can come together to find opportunities to improve the county. The experience led to new career paths for some and advancement for others. Most importantly, it provided a comradery that expanded beyond the classroom and continued beyond graduation.

Lastly, the group of Alumni that have gone through the course previously is there to support you in your journey. When chatting with others that have gone through the program previously, when it was offered through the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, the connections are wonderful and you have a mutual respect and understanding for each other.

In conclusion, I highly recommend anyone that has interest in exploring the various opportunities and challenges facing our County to reach out for more information. Find alum and ask them about their experience. Reach out with your name and contact information and a committee member will be glad to answer any questions you have, or explain the program further. Just by learning more about our vast County, you can make a difference.
