Opinion: Make Dairy Queen more centrally located, Canton resident says

I read with interest “Canton Seeks Funds for Dairy Queen” on the front page of the Nov. 28-Dec. 4 issue of North Country This Week.

I wish the owners success in their rebuilding efforts, and urge them and the grant applicants to consider acquiring and updating the old McDonald’s restaurant on Main Street instead of rebuilding at the old Dairy Queen location.

These block grants have as part of their stated goals “…to develop viable communities by providing decent, affordable housing, and suitable living environments, as well as expanding economic opportunities, principally for persons of low and moderate income.” (http://www.nyshcr.org/Programs/NYS-CDBG/). They also have a goal of “preventing […] blight”.

The McDonalds building presumably is designed for similar business, and the more central location would allow for more accessibility by foot, something that those without a car or ability to use a car can really benefit from.

It would also reuse a currently unused piece of property, and boost economic activity along the primary retail strip.
