Opinion: District 6 legislator hopes to build on changes made in St. Lawrence County

To the Editor:

It’s difficult to believe that 4 years have passed so quickly and that I am once again asking for the support of the residents who reside within St. Lawrence County’s Legislative District 6.

When I first asked for your support, I promised to help make the changes that were necessary to repair our budgeting process, to stop spending money we don’t have, to take accountability for my actions, to make the hard decisions and to represent each and every resident of the towns that I serve, to the best of my ability. I also promised to work hard to gain your support, to serve your interests but most importantly, to earn your trust. I hope you believe I have been true to my word.

I am proud to say that during my tenure, we have been able to enact budgets that are both realistic and capable of providing all necessary services that our residents expect and deserve, while still staying under the 2% tax cap and actually increasing our fund balance. This year, 2018, is projected to be the first year in recent memory that St. Lawrence County will not have to borrow money to tide us over through the end of the year. This is due largely to a steadily improving fund balance, made possible by the hard work of all St. Lawrence County employees.

While I realize there are and will continue to be many issues beyond control of our county government, there are steps that can and must be taken, none of which will be easy or popular, but are most assuredly necessary if we are to continue to survive and provide the taxpayers of St. Lawrence County with the services they expect, require and pay for with their hard earned tax dollars.

I will continue to work hard to bring jobs back to St. Lawrence County, good jobs that will allow our children and their children to stay here if they wish, rather than having to leave the area to find decent work.

I will continue to stand up for your rights guaranteed to you under the 2nd amendment. I will continue to be a good steward of your tax dollars. I will continue to challenge the status quo and I will take accountability for my actions while holding others accountable for theirs.

Thank you for your support over the past 4 years and I would appreciate your continuing support on November 06.

Larry D. Denesha

DeKalb Juction, legislator, District 6
