Since moving to Potsdam this summer my family and I have been enjoying your paper enormously. It really is an exemplary local paper with a great balance of local news, events, ads and in our opinion, well-balanced selections of opinion pieces, letters, and endorsements.
In this heated election season we’ve looked here for a lot of information and found facts and an even-handed approach to content that is the hallmark of a trustworthy news source. Which is why we were so disappointed to see the Oct. 31 – Nov. 6 issue of North Country This Week - complete with a banner partially obscured by a campaign ad.
No doubt, the Elise for Congress campaign paid a chunk of money for that placement. But such a prominent and bold ad cannot but be seen as an endorsement by the paper of this candidate.
If a paper wishes to endorse a candidate on its editorial pages that is fine, but it is simply disappointing to see that the masthead of our local paper is literally for sale.
