Madrid-Waddington Central school board candidate says community and school connection is important

To the Editor:

My name is Melinda “Missy” Conger and I would like to announce that I am running for Madrid-Waddington School Board on May 17. I reside in Waddington with Michael Martin who is a graduate of Madrid-Waddington and our daughter Emma, an 8th grader at Madrid-Waddington.

I often visited the North Country during summer breaks and soon after graduating from Rockville High School in Connecticut started taking classes at SUNY Canton. There, I received an A.S. in General Studies and transferred to SUNY Potsdam where I received my B.A. in Biology and my M.S.T. in Adolescence Education: Science. My experiences as a teacher have included teaching inner city children at a charter school in Connecticut, teaching Biology labs and an Introduction to Chemistry course at SUNY Canton. Currently, I teach 7th - 12th grade sciences at Morristown Central School.

As a parent I always strive to make sure that Emma is growing up in a nurturing and supportive home. As a teacher, I know that we need to balance our time between teaching content and social skills while aiming to provide our students with the skills necessary to be successful. My family values a good public education and recognizes that learning is a lifelong endeavor.

My father, a graduate of Madrid-Waddington School, joined the Navy where he and my family served our country for 21 years. My father’s commitment to our country inspired me to pursue a life of public service. Involved in the community and my career, I have served on several committees in Waddington as well as Morristown Central School.

Making a connection between our community and our school is important for all of us. I feel that my diverse experiences in the field of education, as well as being a parent and volunteer in this community, will allow me to assist the board in making informed decisions about the future of our children.

It would be an honor to be elected to serve the community in this capacity. The budget vote will be at the Madrid-Waddington Auditorium Lobby from 1 to 8 p.m. Voter qualifications are a United States citizen, at least 18 years of age, and a residence within the district for at least 30 days preceding the vote.
