County board District 11 candidate from Potsdam enters race

To the Editor:

My name is Peggy (Hourihan) Brusso, and I am announcing my independent run for St. Lawrence County Legislative District 11.

I reside in Potsdam and I am the product of a former St. Lawrence County Conservative Party chairman father who hails from Brasher Falls, and a lovely, soft-spoken Kennedy-Democrat mother. Growing up in such a household has made me keenly aware that both liberal and conservative views have merits and faults.

I am a registered Democrat, but like many others, I have a good deal of criticism for the current Cuomo administration in Albany. I have been critical of the amount of taxpayer funding he bestows on private projects and his all-or-nothing approach to community development. I can assure you that if I am elected, I will ask questions and do a great deal of research on every topic that comes before me. I will always include numbers, percentages and dollars to back facts, and not merely speculate.

As a member of the public who often feels the media doesn’t report enough on government, I will keep residents up to date and record all public sessions of St. Lawrence County meetings. I plan on having a district 11 website or Facebook page where constituents may message or post topics pertinent to our area and St. Lawrence County.

Lastly, I will address our property and sales tax rates. Zero percent for tax exempt entities is no longer sustainable in 2018. This should be addressed.

I am still gathering signatures that must be turned in by August 21st. If you have not signed another petition, are a registered voter in the 11th district and share my philosophy, I would sincerely appreciate your signature.
