Candidate says she would bring open mind to Madrid-Waddington Central school board

To the Editor:

I am writing to announce my candidacy for a seat on the Madrid Waddington Central School Board of Education (BOE) and to provide an introduction of myself to those I don’t currently have the privilege of knowing. My husband, Peter and I recently moved to Waddington and our oldest of two children began UPK at MWCS this past fall. Having now lived in the area nearly two years, I feel the need to put down roots and connect with my new community.

We have been happy thus far with our experience at Madrid Waddington with an amazing teacher, bus driver, and fellow parents. I have been warmly welcomed by the PTO, with whom I’ve been volunteering with this past year.

Prior to moving to Waddington, we lived in Heuvelton where I was involved as an EMT, auxiliary member, and was on the BOE at Heuvelton Central School. During my short time on the board, I attended a number of trainings/seminars, helped with the hiring of two administrators, served on policy committees, and worked with the entire board to achieve a number of goals.

I am always asked, “Why on earth would you want to serve on the school board?!” Roland Barth said a school is “four walls surrounding the future.” With that in mind, I can’t think of a better place to volunteer my time and energy.

I will bring a great deal of experience that will make me an asset to the BOE. For the last 3 years I have had the opportunity to stay home and raise my children. For the 10 years prior to this, I was the Center Manager at Lincare and my responsibilities included: the profitability of the center, overseeing all aspects of operations, sales and marketing efforts, staffing decisions, and ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.

Prior I worked in Special Events and Fundraising for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Rochester. I earned my Masters of Business Administration from Syracuse University in 2007 and in 2002 my Bachelors of Arts in Communications/Public Relations from St. John Fisher College.

If given the opportunity I will join the board with an open mind and look forward to representing parents, teachers, taxpayers, and most importantly students. My family and I thank you in advance for your support and your vote May 17.
