Two SUNY Canton professors honored with Meritorious Service Award

Elizabeth A. Brown and Janet Parcell-Mitchell were recently honored with the 2016 Meritorious Service Award at SUNY Canton.

Brown, an associate professor in the criminal investigation program, and Parcell-Mitchell, an assistant professor in the health and fitness promotion program, both received their awards at the college's recent Recognition Day Ceremony.

Brown was selected for her commitment to enriching the academic experience of students, according to a press release from the college.

She is the curriculum coordinator for the criminal investigation program, chair of the Strategic Planning Committee and the faculty athletic representative at the college.

She is also the outgoing presiding officer of the faculty assembly, the governing body for SUNY Canton academics, the release said.

"Liz has been invaluable to the college, and is someone who is highly respected for their diplomacy and willingness to make sure every voice is heard," SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran said. "In addition to her service, teaching requirements, and advising duties, she has completed her doctorate and published a book, which has become a popular teaching aid in her field.”

Parcell-Mitchell was recognized for growth of the health and fitness promotion program, which has more than tripled in size since she began her faculty appointment, the release said.

Szafran also said that she has helped employees and the community become healthier through the college's Roo Watcher's weight loss program and student-led exercise sessions.

"Janet volunteers to do whatever it takes to improve this campus for students, faculty and staff," Szafran said. "She is truly an unsung hero on our campus as she takes on additional duties and works to provide the best education and service possible."

The President's Meritorious Service award is bestowed annually to members of the college's faculty or staff who have performed significantly above and beyond normal job expectations.

It is given at the discretion of the president and is widely considered one of the top honors at SUNY Canton.
