MASSENA -- A pair of graduating seniors at Massena High School have been named the 2014 recipients of the Jeannette and Saul Rosenbaum Memorial Scholarship.

Carlie Leary and Rachel (Nikki) Zeitzmann will receive $500 each toward their first year of college studies. Leary will attend Eugene Lang College, The New School for Liberal Arts in New York City where she plans to pursue environmental studies. Zeitzmann will matriculate at SUNY Canton to study nursing. Leary is the daughter of Candida Tavernier of North Main Street. Zeitzmann is the daughter of Robert Zeitzmann of North Main Street.

Leary, who ranks 4th in her graduating class of 202 students, is being honored for her extensive record in community service activities. Her guidance counselor, Robert Jordan, said in his letter of recommendation: “She has volunteered a tremendous amount of time at school and in her community assisting with school events, participating on committees, volunteering and always making herself available whenever the school has a need for a student volunteer.”

Zeitzmann, who ranks 28th, was recognized her resilience, having succeeded academically despite numerous relocations over the years. She has been active in the Learn to Lead, DoSomething Club and Link Crew during her year in Massena.

She said in her application letter, “There is never a day that goes by where I am not honored to be an aide or a guide for another person going through personal struggles.”

The Rosenbaum scholarship is named in memory of two lifelong Massena residents, Ruth and Joel, who graduated from Massena High School in the 1940s.
