POTSDAM -- Undergraduate students from SUNY Potsdam's Department of Modern Languages attended the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), which took place at Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y., from March 31 through April 2.

The six students, all Spanish majors at SUNY Potsdam, included junior Katherin Williams, freshman Kristian Einstman, junior Andrew Bentley, senior Madeline Phillips, junior Breanna Murphy and junior Robert Leabo. Professors Dr. Oscar Sarmiento and Dr. Liliana Trevizan of the modern language department accompanied the students at NCUR.

Of the six students in attendance, four presented their research. Highlights of the research topics presented include "Gay Marriage in the USA and Argentina" by Robert Leabo; "Desaparecidos Grandchildren in Argentina" by Breanna Murphy; an analysis of the Spanish literary work "Pedro Paramo" by Madeline Phillips, and "Abuse of Women in Small Towns, Comparing Potsdam, N.Y., and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico," by Kat Williams.

The National Conference on Undergraduate Research, established in 1987, is dedicated to promoting undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity in all fields of study by sponsoring an annual conference for students. Unlike meetings of academic professional organizations, this gathering of young scholars welcomes presenters from all institutions of higher learning and from all corners of the academic curriculum.
