POTSDAM -- Dr. Edwin J. Portugal, professor of strategic and global management at SUNY Potsdam, was presented with a Distinguished Paper Award at the 6th Annual International Conference of e-CASE that was held in Tokyo, Japan in January 2011.
The paper, entitled "Internationalization in Higher Education: Strategic Perspectives of Universities in the United States and the University of the Philippines," was co-authored with Chancellor Sergio Cao of the University of the Philippines. The collaboration was the result of Dr. Gerry Cao's invitation to serve as a Fulbright Specialist at the University of the Philippines at Diliman in the summer of 2010.
More than 560 papers representing about 40 countries worldwide were submitted for blind review. Only 375 were selected for presentation at the international conference, and the top 6 percent of those accepted were recognized with the Distinguished Paper Award. The candidates for the award are selected based on four main nomination criteria: originality, study completeness, academic/practice contribution, and diversity in field and area.
The recipients were awarded with a plaque at the opening ceremonies of the e-CASE International Conference in Tokyo.
Portugal was granted a Fulbright Senior Specialist Award by the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board in July 2010. The grant award is for a period of five years, during which the professor can spend from two to six weeks in up to three different host institutions overseas.
Portugal teaches courses in strategic and global management, principles of leadership, and organizational behavior and ethics. He was co-director of two previous U.S. Department of State grants to form campus internationalization partnerships with universities in Tunisia and in the Ukraine. Portugal has presented papers at international conferences in Romania, Azerbaijan, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Ukraine. He has been invited to give lectures on leadership and management in Taiwan, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, the Philippines and Tunisia.
