CANTON -- The SUNY Canton student body voted grants coordinator JoAnne M. Fassinger to receive the 2014 Northstar Award.
The honor is given to a faculty or staff member who makes the school a better place, according to a SUNY Canton news release.
She was recognized at the college's May 10 graduation ceremony.
"I love being part of our campus community," Fassinger said in the release. "Through my work, I am able to assist faculty and staff with securing funding for new and improved tools for student learning, to develop new programs and curriculum, and most importantly, to help students be successful with reaching their academic and personal goals."
As grants coordinator, she is responsible for matching faculty requirements with resources available from private foundations and government agencies. The grant funding she has acquired has enriched the educational experience for countless SUNY Canton students, as well as college-bound high school students in the North Country, SUNY Canton says.
As the SUNY Canton Habitat for Humanity campus chapter adviser, she has led alternative spring break trips to construct and renovate homes for low-income families throughout the East Coast.
