St. Lawrence University appoints endowed professors

CANTON -- Nadia Marano, Sarah Gates, Catherine Jahncke, Jeff Young, Ed Harcourt, Aileen O’Donoghue, and Michael Schuckers were recently appointed or re-appointed to endowed professorships at St. Lawrence University.

The faculty were appointed by President William L. Fox based on the recommendation of the Professional Standards Committee, with support from Karl Schonberg, dean and vice president for academic affairs.

Marano was appointed the George F. Baker Professorship of Chemistry. The professorship was established in 1904 and partially endowed in 1918 by George Fisher Baker, son of George Ellis Baker, one of St. Lawrence University’s charter trustees.

Gates was appointed the Craig Professorship of English. The professorship was established in 1872 and endowed in 1873 under the will of John Craig of Rochester. In 1915 the professorship was changed to the Craig Professorship in History and Economics and later, in 1925, to the Craig Professorship of English.

Jahncke was reappointed Hayward Chair in Physics. The Hayward Chair was established in 1883 by Alvinza Hayward of San Mateo, California.

Young was reappointed A. Barton Hepburn Professors in Economics. The Barton Hepburn professorship was established in 1923 under the will of Hepburn, trustee of the university from 1887 to 1894.

Harcourt was appointed Martha E. and Gregg E. Peterson Professors in Mathematics. This professorship was established in 2003 with a generous gift from Martha E. and Gregg E. Peterson to honor and support an outstanding faculty member in mathematics.

Aileen O’Donoghue was reappointed Priest Chair of Physics. The Priest Chair was established in 1925 and partially endowed by the alumni in memory of Henry Priest, Ph.D., professor of mathematics, chemistry, and physics from 1883 to 1912, and dean of the college from 1889 to 1912.

Michael Schuckers was appointed Rutherford Professors of Mathematics. This professorship was established in 1968 with a generous gift from Dr. and Mrs. John Crane in memory of General and Mrs. Harry K. Rutherford (Mrs. Crane's parents) to honor and support an outstanding member of the mathematics department.
