Several St. Lawrence County students honored by Clarkson University

Several St. Lawrence County students were recently honored by Clarkson University:

• Nathaniel Bjelland Brown of Potsdam, a sophomore majoring in communication and social documentation, received the Ilse J. Shaw Award and the Communication & Media Sophomore Award. The Ilse J. Shaw Award was established in 1991 by Professor Emeritus Robert Shaw in honor of his wife. The award is presented annually to a sophomore majoring in humanities and social sciences for outstanding academic achievement. The Communication & Media Sophomore Award is given to a sophomore with the highest GPA in his or her communication courses.

• Tynia Davis of Potsdam, a senior majoring in interdisciplinary liberal studies and political science, received the Student Marshal Award and the Commendable Service Award For Seniors. The Student Marshal Award is to honor students who stand out as leaders and demonstrate outstanding campus/community involvement and service. A limited number of Commendable Service Awards are presented annually to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students, faculty, staff and administration members who have demonstrated quality in service to their area/organization. The award is given to well-rounded individuals who excel in all aspects of college life and are especially dedicated to serving their organization.

• Mallory S. Fisher of Canton, a senior majoring in innovation and entrepreneurship, received the Student Marshal Award.

• Lissette Fernandez of Potsdam, a graduate student majoring in civil and environmental engineering, received the George A. Gray Endowed Fellowship. The award was established in 1995 by George A. Gray to recognize outstanding scholarship and achievement by a first-year graduate student in the department of civil and environmental engineering at Clarkson.

• Emily A. Gonthier of Norfolk, a senior majoring in environmental engineering, received the Charles Martin Clark Memorial Prize and the Commendable Leadership Award For Seniors. The Charles Martin Clark Memorial Prize was established in 1946 by Clark's associates on the Board of Water Supply of the City of New York. The recipient is a senior civil and environmental engineering student of outstanding scholarship and character, possessing qualifications required for a successful professional career. The Commendable Leadership Award For Seniors is presented to juniors, seniors, graduate students, faculty, staff and administration members who have demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities and quality participation in organizations associated with Clarkson and the Potsdam community. The award recipients exhibit exceptional leadership qualities and the versatility to balance all aspects of college life. New Phalanx members are selected from the group of Commendable Leadership Award recipients.

• Supraja Gurajala of Potsdam, a graduate student majoring in computer science, received the Sanda Briggs Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award for Computer Science, given to Clarkson's outstanding graduate computer science teaching assistant.

• Mike Maresca of Hannawa Falls, a senior majoring in financial information and analysis, received the James L. Dohr Accounting Scholarship and Award, created in 1983 by James Dohr to recognize and reward financial information and analysis students with an interest in accounting and/or an accounting career. The scholarship is awarded to a senior who intends to matriculate in the MBA Program at Clarkson University. The recipient will be known as the James L. Dohr Scholar. The award is presented to a junior financial information and analysis major.

• Kimberly Oakes of Brasher Falls, a senior majoring in electrical engineering, received the John B. Russell Memorial Award in memory of Dr. John B. Russell, dean of the School of Engineering (1965-68) and professor of electrical and computer engineering (1965-72). The award was established in 1975 and is awarded to the student judged to be most capable in applying analytical methods in engineering design.

• Robert J. Thomas of Potsdam, a graduate student majoring in civil and environmental engineering, received the Outstanding Teaching Award For Graduate Students in Civil and Environmental Engineering, presented to a full-time graduate student who has demonstrated outstanding ability as a teaching assistant in the department of civil and environmental engineering.
