Michael Gilbert, Potsdam, was recently one of ten students inducted into the Saint Michael's College Alpha Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honor society. He is the son of Andrew and Mary Gilbert of Potsdam, Gilbert, a senior mathematics major, graduated from Parishville-Hopkinton Central.

This 11th annual induction ceremony featured a lecture on "Some Non-Standard Applications of Mathematics to Sports," by Babson College Mathematics Professor Richard Cleary.

Saint Michael's is home to the Vermont Alpha Chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon (PME), established in 2003. PME currently has some 350 chapters at colleges and universities throughout the United States. Math students who meet the requirements can be inducted into the society during their junior or senior year. The purpose of the society is to promote scholarly activity in mathematics among the students in academic institutions.
