Nearly 50 friends and family helped Philip Carpenter celebrate his 90th birthday on Aug. 30, 2010 in the community room at Maplewood Nursing Home in Canton.
Phil lived in Hermon most of his life.
At 17 he went to Idaho to work for the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps ). Millions of young people went there to plant trees during the Depression. They earned $25 a month, and $20 of that was sent home to help feed the families.
Phil's daughter and son-in-law just went to Idaho and revisited were Phil had helped plant trees back in 1937.
