POTSDAM – Jenessa Fenton of Ogdensburg has achieved her certification in ophthalmic assisting.

She joins two other COAs, Stacey Ashley-Parent and Christine McBride, who practice with Dr. Kris VanWagner, an ophthalmologist with the Canton-Potsdam Hospital Eye Care Center, located at 49 Lawrence Ave.

COAs must perform many hours of training under the supervision of an ophthalmologist, working side by side with other COAs; they then must pass a rigorous examination given by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).

COAs are an integral part of the health care team, instructing patients in the proper use of medications, including the correct way to insert eye-drops, and preparing patients for eye surgery.

Jenessa is a graduate of Heuvelton Central School and Harvard University.

She is the daughter of Suzanne Fenton McWilliams and Craig McWilliams of Ogdensburg, and the late Charles Fenton.
