NORWOOD -- Ten-year-old Vanessa Stanka of Norwood has been honored with the President's Volunteer Service Award.
The award was given at the gold level, the highest level, based on the number of hours of community service a volunteer accrues.
She was presented with the award at the New York State Fair in Syracuse on Aug. 29 by by Amanda Daley, director of the Miss Spirit of New York pageant. Vanessa holds the title of Jr. Miss St. Lawrence County from the pageant.
Vanessa has volunteered 155 hours for the year, 134 of which were certified, for a bottle drive she held to raise money for Potsdam Humane Society, where she volunteers. She also held a coat drive, made homemade heat packs for patients in cancer treatment, and has sponsored adoption fees for animals at the shelter, among other things.
With this award Vanessa received a gold medal, a certificate, and a letter signed by President Trump thanking her for her ongoing service to those in need.
