CANTON -- The Canton Winterfest 2018 “Winter Olympics,” part of Canton’s Winterfest Celebration cosponsored by the Canton Recreation Department and Nature Up North, will feature three events the weekend of Friday to Sunday, Feb. 9 to Feb. 11.

Registration for the events – a cardboard sled race, a snow sculpture contest, and cross-country ski race -- is free, and participants may enter any of the events.

• A cardboard sled race is set for 4 p.m. Friday at Bend in the River Park. Teams of two to four are invited to build a sled in advance or come early for sled building from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Pavilion Community Room, where materials will be provided. Sleds must be able to carry one team member. Teams will compete in the youth division (12 and under), or the open, family, or college (students only) divisions. Approved sled-building materials include cardboard, duct tape, recycled plastic bags, paint, and glue. Sleds will judged for speed and creativity, with points awarded to teams winning their division. Registration: Canton Pavilion lobby, 3-3:30 pm..

• The snow sculpture competition is from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Bend in the River Park. Teams of two to four will have 45 minutes to create a snow sculpture out of a provided pile of snow. Teams will be judged in tone of these divisions: youth (12 and under), open, family, or college (students only). Sculptures will be judged and points awarded to teams winning their division along with several other categories. Registration is Saturday in the Pavilion lobby from 1:30 to 2 p.m.

• A cross-country ski race will begin at 10 am Sunday after registration at 9:30 a.m. at the Best Western Clubhouse, East Main Street. Participants of all ages, skill, and experience levels are encouraged to participate. Youth division participants, 12 and under, will ski a half-mile loop, while open and college student division skiers will complete the loop twice for a one-mile race. Points awarded to race winners in each division along with several other awards, including those for beginners. For those who do not have their own equipment, loaner skis and boots will be available courtesy of CCS. Those who would like to borrow equipment must pre-register and provide the skier’s height and boot size.

Participants from all events are invited to the awards ceremony and prize raffle at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Best Western Clubhouse.

There will be a prize raffle for a chance to win one of many local prizes and giveaways from generous sponsors.

All “Winter Olympic” participants will be given one raffle entry ticket for each event they compete in. Winners must be present at the raffle to receive a prize.

For each event, winners in each division will receive top points and all participants will receive points towards their overall “Winter Olympics” score. The three individuals with the highest scores overall will receive awards.

To register, contact the Canton Recreation Department by Tuesday, Feb. 6 at recreation@cantonny.us to tell them which events they are registering for, participant name, age and division.

Individuals may register for all three events, and may participate on different teams for events one and two.
