COLTON – A wine and cheese open house, a flotilla and the annual ham dinner and antique car show will keep Colton busy Labor Day weekend.

A wine and cheese open house to further town tourism and beautification efforts will take place Friday, Sept. 2, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., co-coordinated by Laurie Thornton and Ruth McWilliams. The event is sponsored by Steve and Laurie Thornton on their property, Ziplid Studio and Lodging, at 15 Gustin Square.

All residents 21 years and older are invited. The Town Tourism & Beautification Committee seeks input on a variety of projects including a new parking area with a river-related kiosk, networking among local businesses and organizations in support of the town and tourism development, continuation of activities including summer performances, flea markets, and more. Residents planning to attend should contact Laurie Thornton at 265-5762 or ziplid@twcny.rr.com for planning purposes.

The last two whitewater releases by Brookfield Renewable Power at the Stone Valley section of the Raquette River take place Saturday, Sept. 3 and Monday, Sept. 5 beginning at 8 a.m. The Raquette River Blueway Corridor tent will be set up and staffed by volunteers at the trailhead on Riverside Drive just past the Colton Fire Station, weather permitting. The 2011 Colton t-shirts will be available for purchase at the tent or nearby at the new Whitewater Welcome Center if it is raining.

The new Whitewater Welcome Center is located at The Finish Line Lounge at 102 Main St. i on the bridge crossing the Raquette River. It will open early on Sept. 3 and Sept. 5 for information, hospitality, restrooms, and food after 11 a.m. On Sept. 3 at 9:30 a.m., registration begins for the second annual Flotilla, sponsored by The Finish Line. Directions will be provided to participants when registering. Entry fee is $10 with all proceeds benefiting the Colton Community Food Pantry. Call 274-0109 for more information about the Flotilla.

On Sunday, Sept. 4, the Colton Fire Department will hold its annual ham dinner and antique car show at 11 a.m. at Fireman's Field on Hanson Road, just off Gulf Road, along with a craft fair which opens earlier at 10 a.m.. Volunteers are still needed to help set up on Saturday. For more information e-mail judy@colton-fire-department.org.

Also, volunteers continue to staff the Raquette River Information Center on State Highway 56 in South Colton across from the post office. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Labor Day and will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through the month of September.
