Veteran's Day celebrations planned in Hogansburg, Canton, Ogdensburg, Gouverneur, Oxbow Nov. 11

The Swe-kat-si Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will dedicate a new monument at Groulx Park in Ogdensburg Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. to honor Revolutionary War patriots.

St. Lawrence County residents will have numerous options when deciding how to celebrate Veteran’s Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, this year.

Veteran’s Day celebrations will be held in Hogansburg, Canton, Ogdensburg, Gouverneur and Oxbow this year.

The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino, Hogansburg, will give all veterans a free brunch or dinner Sunday. All veterans with Veteran’s ID or proof of veteran status will be able to choose a free bunch or dinner at the Native Harvest Buffet. A full Thanksgiving menu will be available at the Native Harvest Buffet, with a special in the Maple Room. For further information visit www.mohawkcasino.com.

In Ogdensburg, The Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a ceremony at Groulx Park at 11 a.m. A monument in honor of Revolutionary War veterans of St. Lawrence County will be dedicated. The Long Rapids Fife and Drum Corps. and the Sons of the American Revolution will also be present to participate in the ceremony.

Also in Ogdensburg, Amvets Post 19 will hold a traditional free to veteran’s dinner with New York steak with baked potato, salad and bread from 4 to 6 p.m. Dinner will be $7. Contact 393-6140 to make a reservation and order a steak done to your preference.

Canton veterans can choose between an Eagle carving raffle with the VFW Men’s Auxiliary, along with a ceremony, or a concert at St. Lawrence University.

The Canton VFW will hold a ceremony in honor of veterans at 11 a.m., which will include raising the flag that was used at the funeral of a local Vietnam veteran, Everett Aldous. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony. The VFW will also hold an eagle wood carving raffle. The eagle was donated by Terry Mekendree. Tickets for the raffle are $2, or 3 tickets for $5. St. Lawrence University will hold a "Music for Veterans Day" concert by the University Chorus at 2 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. For more information visit www.stlawu.edu/news/uchorus_veteransday12.html.

Gouverneur veterans can celebrate with a free turkey dinner at the Gouverneur Elks Lodge, Route 11 South, from noon to 2 p.m.

Oxbow veterans are invited to the third annual Veteran’s Day spaghetti dinner at the Oxbow Volunteer Fire Company from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The menu will include spaghetti, meatballs, tossed salad, bread and dessert. Takeout will also be available. Dinner will be $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $6 for veterans with ID, and $4 for kids 5 to 12, with those under 5 free. For more information call Pam at 287-1320.
