CANTON -- TAUNY, 53 Main St., will mark the re-opening of The TAUNY Center Saturday, Feb. 9 with the opening of a new exhibit, “Artists of the Forest.”

The exhibit includes several traditional artists from the North Country.

Artists of the Forest features 13 traditional artists from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and northern New York, including rustic furniture makers Annette and Sherman Craig, rustic furniture maker Ron Fenlong, rustic furniture maker Barry Gregson, rustic furniture maker Fred Peryer and wood carver Melvin Roy.

Whether shaping snowshoes, building birch bark canoes or crafting twig furniture, these artists artfully balance skill with traditional knowledge, continuing the region’s heritage. This exhibit explores that heritage and its relationship to the natural environment of the Northern Forest.

The exhibit is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Quimby Family Foundation and the Maine Community Foundation. Artists of the Forest is organized by Cultural Resources of Rockport, Maine working in collaboration with TAUNY and the Vermont Folklife Center. The exhibit will also tour to sites in Vermont and Maine.
