Syrian refugee civilian security speaker to host presentation today in Canton

CANTON -- Conflict analyst Shelley M. Deane will give her presentation “Human Capital: The Education Rights Remedy for Syrian Refugee Civilian Security” at 7:30 p.m. on April 28, in Hepburn Hall 218, St. Lawrence University. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Director of the London-based Brehon Advisory, Deane will discuss the refugee crisis stemming from the Syrian Civil War. She will focus on work that she and her colleagues have been undertaking to support educational programs for young people uprooted by war.

Deane is a former assistant professor of international relations and Middle East politics at Bowdoin College. She has researched and written on the ending and mending of conflicts, mediation and negotiation, peace agreements, security pacts, factions, paramilitaries and parliamentarians, and crime and corruption in states in transition. Deane has mediation and institutional transitional reform experience in Iraq, Lebanon, Tunisia, Palestine, the United Arab Emirates and Ireland. She earned her doctorate degree in government from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2004.
