St. Lawrence Valley Hospice's fourth annual Radiothon fundraiser set for Thursday

POTSDAM -- Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley will hold a radiothon for the fourth year in a row Thursday, Nov. 8.

Six radio stations are scheduled to participate in the radiothon, which will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

WQTK 92.7 FM, WMSA 1340 AM, WLFK 95.3 FM, WSLB 1400 AM, WSNN 99.3 FM and WPDM 1470 AM will be broadcasting the telethon from the Hospice center and disc jockeys from Stephens Media, St. Lawrence Radio, and Community Broadcasters will host, according to Brad Catling, director of development and community relations at Hospice.

Catling says that the fact that the participants are “competitors the rest of the year, yet come together” to support Hospice is what makes the event so special.

The purpose of the event is twofold, Catling says. Hospice hopes to use the radiothon to educate people about all the services that Hospice offers by sharing hospice stories from patients and family members and to raise money to help support hospice services.

Catling is hoping to use the event to bring public attention to what he refers to as “the $20 difference,” which refers to the gap between what medical insurance and Medicare cover and what treatment for most patients actually costs. The organization also treats patients without insurance and provides bereavement help to the community and local schools, as well as spiritual support to patients and their family members.

Catling says he hopes to see the radiothon raise $24,000 for Hospice this year. The event has raised roughly $17,000 to $18,000 the past two years. “It’s a stretch, but I think we can do it,” he says.
