St. Lawrence University hosting mathematics conference in Canton

CANTON — St. Lawrence University’s Department of Math, Computer Science, and Statistics will host the 2018 Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (HRUMC) on Saturday, April 7.

This will be the 25th HRUMC and will feature more than 60 talks primarily given by undergraduate students from across the region. The event is free and open to the public.

Macalester College Professor of Mathematics Karen Saxe will deliver the keynote address in Gulick Theatre on “Mathematics and Social Justice.”

Saxe was the recipient of the 2007 Mathematical Association of America-North Central Section (MAA-NCS) Distinguished Teaching Award and the 2007 Macalester College Excellence in Teaching Award. She currently serves as MAA Vice President and as editorial board chair of the Anneli Lax New Mathematics Library.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. in Valentine Hall, and the first session of talks will begin at 9:30 a.m. There is no fee for the conference and those who plan to attend are encouraged to preregister at the following link: https://bit.ly/2IfK3jU.

In February, St. Lawrence University’s Department of Math, Computer Science and Statistics received an National Science Foundation grant to help support hosting the 2018 Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference.
