CANTON — St. Lawrence University will celebrate the Year of the Dog with a Chinese New Year Gala starting at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, in Eben Holden. The event is free and open to the campus community and the general public.
Sponsored by the Chinese Student Association and St. Lawrence’s Center for International and Intercultural Studies (CIIS), the sixth-annual Chinese New Year’s event will feature food, traditional and modern Chinese dance, games and prizes as well as the opportunity to learn more about Chinese culture.
Dinner will begin around 7 p.m., and performers will take to the mainstage around 7:30. Ice cream will be served up after the performers conclude and activities will resume.
Zihao (David) Liu, president of the Chinese Student Association said that a table has been reserved for Reachout of St Lawrence County, a suicide prevention hotline, where he volunteers.
“It can be really hard for international students to come to campus and feel completely alone,” said David. “We want students to know the resources that are available to them here on campus and in the community to give them a sense of feeling more at home.”
The new year will welcome in the Year of the Dog, which in the Chinese zodiac represents those who are honest, loyal, kind, and prudent. They are known to be the truest of friends, but – due to their difficultly conveying thoughts and feelings to others – may leave some with an impression of stubbornness.
